Whoooo, I know for a fact that there are fans everywhere trying to recover from that kiss. It was lovely, and passionate, and worthy of a loud, enthusiastic Hell Yeah! But I’m going to pick it apart to show you what it all means, because there is literally so much going on here.
Example A: Alec strides right up to Magnus and pulls him in by the lapels of his jacket without any sort of hesitancy. He made his choice on the altar, having literally lost his breath at the sight of Magnus walking into the room, and with his mind made up, he goes in and goes for it. He steps right up into Magnus’ personal space and pulls him into his own body, wanting him close and accessible, and he holds him there against him for the duration of the kiss. Magnus also receives him immediately, following Alec’s lead.
Example B: Here they are switching lips, exploring the shape of each other’s mouths. Alec’s mouth moves a fraction faster, which tells us that he’s leading and Magnus is matching him kiss for kiss, and there is barely a breath of air between them. Their noses are nuzzling each other’s cheeks, and they are connected from forehead to lips to chin with each kiss. This amount of closeness, especially regarding the touching of foreheads, shows a great deal of intimacy. Foreheads touching is also intensely spiritual in certain cultures as it means a meeting of the souls, and it also holds the placement of the third eye, which is a mystical concept regarding perception, inner vision and enlightenment. Connected like this, Magnus and Alec see each other on another level.
Example C: Magnus follow’s Alec’s lips as he pulls back briefly to look into his eyes, not ready to let go. But this is Alec’s first kiss, and he’s the one making the big statement right now, so Magnus patiently retreats until Alec is ready again. It’s also here that they discover their dynamic - Alec is controlling this kiss in every way, and Magnus is more than willing to stand there and let him do as he pleases. Alec may be just starting to let his emotions through, but Magnus knows what it is to desire someone and it’s clear here that he wants Alec.
Example D: Magnus’ face softens and he receives Alec again with the beginnings of a smile. This time their kiss is angled, deeper, their foreheads no longer touching, but they are still completely connected from nose to chin, resting against each other’s faces and breathing the other in deep like they’re trying to get closer still. Again, it’s very intimate and passionate. Where they started off by connecting to each other and communicating their unspoken feelings in that moment, here they are exploring the new feelings they are getting from the kiss itself. It’s fun. The practise round is done and dusted, and they’re going in for more. They’re also now completely in sync.
This wasn’t just a fabulous first kiss for Alec and Magnus. It was a perfect first kiss that incorporated both character’s individual energies. Matt and Harry are very, very good at what they do.
